Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. James 5:17-18 (NIV).

Greetings from a dry and thirsty land!

Cyprus is in the midst of a severe drought, and though summer is still some time away, we have already begun water rationing. Each home is allowed a maximum of just 36 hours of water per week (12 hours for 3 days). Some homes are having trouble getting any water at all!

Since the recent launch of the 24-hour SAT-7 KIDS channel (in December 2007), there has been a growing demand for on-screen talent. The channel regularly utilizes Arab Christian children to serve has hosts, presenters, actors and reporters. Right now several producers are auditioning children to fill new roles. In addition producers are in the process of building sets for the new shows. Other SAT-7 KIDS staff are exploring how best to use the Internet to support children who watch the programmes and want to know more about the topics they see on air.

Perhaps you have heard of “The Alpha Course” which is basic introduction to Christianity being offered around the world, by churches of most major denominations. Developed over many years, this course is designed to help people better understand the foundations of the faith. The programme begins with a talk entitled: “Christianity: Boring, Untrue and Irrelevant” and moves on to cover such topics as, “Why should I believe the Bible” and “Who is Jesus.” SAT-7 PARS recently began airing a version of this course delivered by an Iranian pastor. Many viewers have written and called to say how much the course is helping them better understand what Christians believe and why.

In the Book of Revelation, chapter 12 we read that Satan was overcome by “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. Someone’s personal testimony, or the story of what God has done in their life, can be a powerful tool. SAT-7 airs many testimony programmes including, “Files from the Past” and “Just an Ordinary Person.” In both of these programmes, a Middle Eastern Christian’s life is presented in a dramatized form, with interviews and added documentary information. “Files from the Past” is an on going programme and some upcoming episodes include one about a weapon-carrying drug dealer who is now a Christian minister, a man who was addicted to pornography, and a woman who was abandoned by her family. “Just An Ordinary Person” tells the life story of local Christian leaders and how God can use ordinary people to accomplish the extraordinary.
