SAT-7 TÜRK Programming

Tanri Misafiri

Genre: Cooking

Description:  Most men like to eat, but how many can cook?  That’s a problem being addressed on the SAT-7 TÜRK program, Tanri Misafiri which translates from Turkish approximately into “take care of your special guests.”  The show’s host is a man who likes to eat…and also likes to cook! While he is demonstrating how viewers can stew up something new, he also serves up spiritual food-for-thought.

The host hopes this approach will reach both men and women who might otherwise choose watch other TV stations - but whom he hopes will stop flipping through channels and will keep tuned to SAT-7 TÜRK when they see the appetizing food and information being offered!  It is a nice example of biblical living worked out in Turkish culture.

Paul encourages Christians in Hebrews 13:2 with these words:  “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.”

Confrontation

Genre: Teaching

Description: God cares about every single detail of our lives. He knows everything we do; we cannot escape His glance. This is the underlying prinicple that Rev. Turgay Üçal, minister of Moda Presbyterian Church in Istanbul, seeks to share from his heart and make clear in his programs. There is a two-fold aim to the Confrontation series, first to help Turkish Christians learn how they can rely on Biblical principles to guide their lives on a daily basis. Second, the series aims to provide high quality TV programs that help Turkish-speaking non-Christians to understand Christian life, be challenged by the Christian message and explain to them how Christians should live out their faith in daily life.

"What he was saying was very interesting. I wasn’t even initially aware that he was a Christian or that I switched to a Christian channel. I just said to myself what a good teacher. Now my perspective on Christians has changed."

Relationships

Genre: Comedy

Description: Relationships explores the various dynamics of relationships using comedy sketches and dialogue. Each episode begins with the cast reflecting on real-life relationships using Biblical truths. The humor in the sketches opens a door for the audience to participate in the thoughtful discussions that follow. For example, one recent program included a scene where a woman was picking mushrooms in a city park. A park attendant came up to her and said, “you can’t pick those, they are poisonous!” The woman responded, “Well, I’m not going to eat them of course! I’m only going to sell them in the market!” With that kind of lead-in, the presenters are able to talk about how we often do things that poison our relationships with others and also how God created us for loving Him.

The Way

Genre: Drama

Description: The Way is a Lebanese drama series which is designed to vividly demonstrate how Christ can impact the lives of individuals. This 62 episode series was tranlated and dubbed from Arabic into Turkish. The first season has begun airing.

The plot revolves around a very successful family (the father, Dr. Salim is a heart surgeon, the mother a psychiatrist). The Salims, despite great financial success, struggle with serious problems in their lives and relationships. The family has hired a gardener who is a commited Christian. His life and witness gradually have a dramatic impact upon their own. As the series progresses through the 62 episodes, God gives the gardener the opportunity to demonstrate to the family “The Way”.

Many viewers have said they appreciate the fact that the show doesn’t “sugar-coat” difficult issues such as adultery and drug abuse. They also say they are glad to see a program that deals with real life issues, but which includes a Christian perspective that gives its viewers an opportunity to see the Holy Spirit at work.
