Broadcasting Peace

Video of the destruction and carnage in Gaza is filling the airwaves in the Middle East and North Africa. When will it end? Reprisal warfare in this region is as old as civilization itslef. The law of the Old Testament, an “eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” still impacts the geopolitics of the region.

But Jesus gave us a different way. His words are recorded in Matthew 5:38-46. "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also...Love your Enemies. You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 'But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.”

One of our polices at SAT-7 is to avoid political debates. But we can play a role in encouraging neighbors to love each other. As Christians it’s important to point out injustice and show when people are suffering. Innocent people, on both sides of this conflict, are being killed. What can we do?

We can serve as peacemakers, and SAT-7 is broadcasting prayers for peace such as this one by the Deputy-Chairman of the SAT-7 International Board, Dr. Safwat El Baiady:

May peace prevail in the land where Jesus was born and may they accept the words of the Savior of the world, who commanded us to make peace. He said, “blessed are the Peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God.” We pray this land will experience joy instead of tears.

Let us pray for peace in the Middle East in 2009.
